Esther Mahlangu

A South African National Treasure”

Esther Mahlangu, is one of South Africa’s most globally acclaimed artists. She was born in 1935, and has spent her life touring the world, dressed in her beautiful traditional Ndebele clothing, touching all who she meets.

Mam Esther has collaborated with numerous respected museums, artists, curators, brands, celebrities and entities over the course of her illustrious career.

In 1991, she became the first lady and first African to be invited to create a ‘BMW Art Car’ thereby joining other respected artists such as David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella.

In 2016, she collaborated with Belvedere Vodka and John Legend, to create the labels for a limited range of Belvedere Vodka bottles to raise money to be used for the fight against HIV in Africa.

In the same year she collaborated once again with BMW to paint panels in their new 7 Series for launch at the Frieze Art Fair in London and participated in the ‘SA – Art of a Nation’ exhibition at the British Museum.

In 2017, she joined Dr Makaziwe Mandela, the eldest daughter of Mr Nelson Mandela, to unveil a series of artworks that she created in 2004 in collaboration with Mr Mandela for the first time at The Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg.
