A Tribute to Nelson Mandela was an extremely well received exhibition by Esther Mahlangu, the globally acclaimed Ndebele artist. Mam Esther, was presented with a series of 6 prints of drawings created by Mr Nelson Mandela in 2001. Esther embellished these prints to create 5 paintings and a written motivation in 2004.

Dr Makaziwe Mandela, the eldest daughter of Nelson Mandela joined Esther to unveil this collection for the first time at the gala launch at The Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg on the 1st March 2017. Over 500 people attended the openings over 2 nights including 10 Ambassadors, 5 High Commissioners and over 50 media representatives.

95 signed limited edition portfolios created from Esther’s paintings were released on this evening. Over 20 sets and all of Esther’s paintings that were exhibited sold over the course of the exhibition.

Mam Esther is 81 years old, and has spent her life travelling the world in her beautiful traditional Ndebele dress touching the lives of all who meet her. Esther has collaborated with many museums, respected galleries, artists, celebrities and global brands.

In 2016, she collaborated with John Legend and Belvedere Vodka and BMW for their new 7 Series that was exhibited at Frieze London. She also participated in the ‘Art of A Nation’ exhibition at the British Museum during the same year and one of her artworks graced the front page of the catalogue.
